Executive Summary

Designed and delivered a comprehensive AI training program for clinical and administrative staff, leading to successful implementation of three AI initiatives within six months.

Challenge

HealWell Hospitals Group, a large network of healthcare facilities, aimed to leverage AI to improve patient outcomes, streamline administrative processes, and enhance diagnostic capabilities. However, a significant skills gap existed among their clinical and administrative staff regarding AI technologies and their practical applications in a healthcare setting. There was a need for a comprehensive upskilling program to build AI literacy and competency across the organization.

Solution

ModelShifts was tasked with designing and delivering a tailored AI upskilling program for HealWell. Our solution focused on:

  1. Needs Assessment & Curriculum Design: We worked with HealWell leadership and department heads to identify specific AI knowledge and skill requirements for different roles (clinicians, nurses, administrators, IT staff). Based on this, we designed a modular curriculum covering:
    • Fundamentals of AI and Machine Learning in Healthcare.
    • Ethical considerations and data privacy (HIPAA compliance) in AI for healthcare.
    • AI applications in medical imaging, diagnostics, patient management, and operational efficiency.
    • Hands-on workshops with relevant AI tools and platforms.
  2. Customized Training Delivery: We employed a blended learning approach, combining interactive online modules, expert-led virtual workshops, and in-person training sessions (where feasible). Content was tailored with healthcare-specific examples and case studies relevant to HealWell’s operational context.
  3. Practical Application & Project-Based Learning: The program included project-based assignments where participants could apply their new AI knowledge to real-world challenges within their departments, fostering practical skill development and immediate value creation.
  4. Train-the-Trainer Program: To ensure sustainability, we implemented a train-the-trainer module to equip a cohort of HealWell’s internal staff to continue delivering AI training and support ongoing learning.

Results

The AI upskilling program had a transformative impact on HealWell Hospitals Group:

  • Successful Implementation of AI Initiatives: Within six months of program completion, HealWell successfully launched three new AI-driven initiatives: an AI-powered tool for early sepsis detection, an automated patient scheduling system, and an NLP-based solution for clinical documentation improvement.
